Royal Frenchel Health and Transparency
At Royal Frenchel, our focus is on breeding dogs with the best possible health outcomes, based on careful genetic selection and consistent monitoring. While no breed is free of health challenges, Royal Frenchels have shown significantly fewer health issues than standard French Bulldogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. We believe in sharing what we know with honesty and clarity—because making a responsible choice begins with accurate information.

Breeding for Health and Stability
Our breeding program prioritizes health, temperament, and longevity. Each pairing is selected with these traits in mind. We track outcomes over time and immediately retire any breeding lines that show recurring issues. Our goal is to reduce the prevalence of known genetic disorders while maintaining a consistent and balanced temperament. Royal Frenchels were originally developed in part to meet the needs of patients and service dog programs, which placed a high demand on both physical health and emotional reliability. This intentional foundation continues to inform our breeding process today.
Recognition for Health & Longevity
In an independent assessment by Farmers Insurance, Royal Frenchels were ranked #2 on their list of Top Hybrid Dog Breeds in the United States. Rankings were based on factors such as health, temperament, agility, and compatibility with family life. This recognition reflects real-world outcomes—fewer medical claims, greater longevity, and overall lower risk.
Why Health Transparency Matters
Veterinary costs and breed-specific insurance plans are increasingly guided by known health trends. Transparent reporting allows prospective dog owners to plan ahead with a clearer understanding of long-term care needs. Royal Frenchels cost far less to insure as they have been specifically bred to reduce these risks, and we continue to refine our approach with every generation.
Our Commitment to Transparency
We’re one of the only breeder in the world that we have found who publicly shares health records—and we do so out of respect for those seeking to find a great dog and our customers who over 65%  come back for a 2nd, or 3rd or 4th Royal! Lol!  Our reporting includes all known health concerns submitted by Royal Frenchel families, tracked across more than a decade. While no dataset is ever complete, consistent patterns emerge over time—and those patterns matter. What makes this even more meaningful is that our in-house findings are strongly supported by third-party research. The extensive Farmers Insurance study, which analyzed over 140,000 policies across 246 breeds, revealed results that closely mirror our own: Royal Frenchels experience health issues at a far lower rate than most breeds. When independent data lines up with internal records, it offers the kind of credibility few breeders can claim—and we’re proud to share it with you.
Health Statistics (as of 2/17/25)
These statistics are based on 1,868 Royal Frenchels placed between 2011 and 2025, including dogs aged 1 to 15 years old: Royal Frenchels have shown health concerns at a rate more than 10 times lower than traditional French Bulldogs. They also show significantly fewer issues compared to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, another breed in their lineage. Common issues reported include mild allergies, occasional luxating patella (most commonly in the smallest size group), and infrequent skin sensitivities. We encourage interested families to review the complete data, which breaks down each health concern by frequency and context. A Special Thank You
I want to thank Brian and Mabel, one of our most treasured Royal Families for inspiring me to share this page with you. In Brian’s words “Mabel has been the most incredible spirit and friend”… he has ever known. Mabel was diagnosed with cancer years ago and shared her kind ways and loving personality before she left with Brian’s new Royal, Chenille.
Our guarantee is not only to employ the best breeding practices, but also to give you the best care. Should your dog ever have a serious life threatening genetic health issue we will either give you another dog of equal value or a serious discount on another pup depending upon the age of the dog at the time of diagnosis. Our vet has to confirm the diagnosis of course, and reasonable records of tests etc. need to be shown. However, we will always meet you with an open heart to support you and your dog for any transition or need.
