A Note on Nutrition from Dr. Robin Taylor, DVM
“When it comes to nutrition, I’ll be honest—I’m passionate.  After graduating from veterinary school, I earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health, completed a two-year fellowship in Epidemiology, and spent over 20 years working in public health, food safety and food inspection for the military as well. I am a retired Colonel of the USAF. Needless to say, I don’t recommend anything lightly. Over the years, I’ve become a firm believer in pawTree (
pawTree.com/doglove).
In my professional opinion, it represents the highest standards in pet food and wellness today. Before explaining why, it’s important you understand how much of the pet food industry actually works.”
What Most Dog Food Labels Don’t Tell You
What Most Dog Food Labels Don’t Tell You
Most pet food companies legally use animals classified as “unfit for human consumption.” This can include animals that:  Contain antibiotics, hormones, or other drugs  Were euthanized (common in some meat sources and of course, the meds are still in them.)  Were already dead prior to processing (up to 3 days out with infection, illness and all the bugs bacteria and other lovelies that can find a home in their, carcass)  Were not humanely slaughtered (high fear causes stress hormones to flood the meat. Besides it is inhumane!)  While some companies choose higher standards, many opt for what is legal rather than what is wholesome. They are simply organized for revenue not protection of your pet.
Understanding Common Pet Food Terms
Named Meat (Best Choice) Example: Chicken This is actual muscle meat—what you’d recognize as food.  Named Meat Meal Includes muscle meat, organs, and bone ground together. Quality varies widely, and most companies don’t disclose the ratios. (Intestines for instance can be packed with poop and as a result, weighted as food!)  Meat By-Products (Lowest Quality) These include non-nutritive parts such as feathers, beaks, and toenails. They are commonly used as fillers—even in expensive brands.  Fillers Cheap ingredients used to bulk up food, often wheat, corn, or soy. These grains are inflammatory, rapidly convert to sugar, and can disrupt your dog’s endocrine system.
Why Consistency Matters—Especially for Small Dogs
There are far too few federal inspectors overseeing pet food manufacturing. Some companies quietly change ingredients seasonally to save money—without updating labels. It costs less to pay fines than it does to make the millions these companies make using poor ingredients that harm your dog in the end.  For small breeds like Royal Frenchel Frenchies, especially puppies, sudden ingredient changes can cause severe digestive upset and, in extreme cases, can be life-threatening especially for super micros and micros.
Why pawTree Is Different
One of the things I love most about pawTree is why it was created. Founder Roger Morgan, a Harvard Business School graduate, built pawTree out of love for his pets and a desire to raise industry standards—not simply to make money. The mission of the company (which after years with the food I can say is upheld) is: “…Help pets and their people thrive.” And it has certainly helped my dogs do that.   pawTree foods are developed by PhD nutritionists and veterinary specialists, not your ordinary vet who has had little understanding or education in nutrition or preventative medicine. The foods meet or exceed standards set by AAFCO, WSAVA, and the FDA.
Digestibility matters: pawTree foods average 89–92% digestibility, meaning your dog absorbs more nutrition, eats less food, and produces less waste. It has resulted in not one dog in my kennel ever having to take allergy meds, or other means. The cost savings to my kennel in vet care since pawTree has been 80% reduction in cost. Dogs are happier, healthier and have better babies.    With pawTree:  You can understand what’s on the label  You get exactly what’s promised from well sourced, humanely treated animals  pawTree Standards at a Glance  Meat is always the first ingredient  No by-products, fillers, GMOs, dyes, or preservatives  No corn, wheat, or soy—ever  Ingredients sourced primarily in the USA  Tested for Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli   Manufactured under strict HACCP safety programs  Never a single product recall
